Proposed World Trade Centre Perth reaches Stage 2 assessment

Perth’s CBD could soon be the site of a $1.85 billion World Trade Centre, after plans for the project successfully underwent a Stage One preliminary assessment as part of the Liberal National Government’s unsolicited bids policy.

Premier Colin Barnett said that the private redevelopment project is the first proposal to pass stage one and will now continue to Stage Two which will include a detailed assessment phase.

The proposed World Trade Centre Perth would include two towers, one spanning 36 levels and the other 75.  Also included will be commercial, residential and recreational facilities which would all be built above the existing train line.

Premier Colin Barnett revealed that the project would include building a unique commercial, residential and entertainment precinct on 1.9 hectares of land located between Perth and McIver train stations.

“World Trade Centre Perth is proposing a development that will involve an iconic architectural design to showcase Western Australian capabilities and commercial opportunities, connecting Perth to 327 World Trade Centre locations around the globe,” Mr Barnett said.

“That a developer is willing to make this investment demonstrates strong confidence in the future of Perth and has the ability to stimulate diverse trade and investment opportunities for the State.”

As part of its Stage Two assessment, the proposal will now be required to directly address a number of necessary requirements, such as proving their ability to technically and financially deliver the project.

An unsolicited bid is any proposal put to the Government by the private sector which has not been formally requested by the Government. Lands Minister Terry Redman spoke of why the Government had developed an unsolicited bid guideline.

“The guideline was developed to provide a transparent and consistent framework to deal with unsolicited bids received through the Government’s Land Asset Sales Program based on the approach adopted in other jurisdictions in Australia.

“This is exactly the kind of unique project, with commercial and community benefits, that the Unsolicited Bids Guideline was designed to facilitate assessment of,” Mr Redman said.
