South East Dominating Australia’s Skyscraper Market

Melbourne and Sydney are leading the way in Australia’s high-rise and skyscraper boom. Highlighting major high-rise construction projects that have been constructed to date and are underway for the South east states, the Australian Smart Skyscraper Summit 2017 convenes in Melbourne on the 28-29th of March 2017.

Profiling projects such as Australia’s tallest prefabricated building at 133 metres, Melbourne’s 323 La Trobe Street and Sydney’s smart and sustainable development, 1 Bligh Street, the Australian Smart Skyscraper Summit will bring together industry experts to knowledge share and discuss the future of high-rise green construction in Australia. Looking at case studies from overseas, including Asia and the Middle East, the Summit will hone in on Australia’s unique environmental concerns and priorities for skyscraper development.

Director at Hickory Group, George Argyrou, will outline the rising popularity of prefabricated construction such as 323 La Trobe St as well as the inherent challenges of implementing prefabrication on a larger scale at the Australian Smart Skyscraper Summit. According to Hickory Group, 323 La Trobe Street, a 44 level residential tower, was constructed through innovative integrated structural systems. Constructing the first two levels of the high-rise structure conventionally, additional levels were then built off site and assembled via crane. This process has the additional benefit of saving on total time of construction and ensuring greater safety on site. Hickory Group believes that prefabricated construction processes are 50% faster than conventional construction methods, produce up to 90% less waste and add to the sustainable integrity of the construction process.

“A building packed with many innovative environmental technologies”, Sydney’s 1 Bligh Street is an ecologically sustainable commercial tower, says Managing Director at Architectus Ray Brown. The tower is constructed of 40% recycled concrete, 90% steel with 50% recycled content and recycled timber. It also features innovative environmental elements such as a double skin façade, a naturally ventilated atrium, solar cooling, tri-generation, black water treatment, rainwater harvesting and sewer mining. Appearing at the Australian Smart Skyscraper Summit, Mr Brown will be addressing the rise of innovation in environmental design elements in high-rise construction.

Senior Associate at PTW Architects, Mark Giles, brings 25 years’ experience in the built environment to some of Australia’s major high-rise projects. A major project from PTW Architects, Sydney’s One Central Park is a 117-metre tower featuring the world’s tallest vertical garden and Australia’s first residential cantilevered heliostat. Mr Giles outlines the smart, green high-rise construction at the Australian Smart Skyscraper Summit held on the 28-29th March 2017 at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre.
