11:05 - 11:30INTERNATIONAL KEYNOTE Developing the World’s Tallest Net Zero Timber Building
The challenge of designing the world’s tallest mass timber building came with some unique problems to solve for, chiefly the lateral forces of wind, and massing for optimal structural integrity and functional efficiency. To make this challenge even more ambitious, the architects were tasked with creating a building that could be factory-built for fast assembly on-site. Join Steven Paynter for his keynote talk to learn how Gensler partnered with Alphabet-owned company, Sidewalk Labs, to produce a prototype design for the world’s tallest mass timber skyscraper. He will give an overview of a 14-month long process of research and development including the work completed with Sidewalk Labs, as well as taking the best work from Gensler’s growing Smart City and Sustainably portfolio. The talk will cover the challenges of structural design, life safety, and new approaches to fire and sustainability.

14:00 - 14:20Re-Evaluating Melbourne: Retaining the City’s Civic Soul Amongst a Sea of Skyscrapers In an effort to manage a rapidly growing population, Melbourne’s buildings are becoming taller; its city more densified. How can designers and planners of these vertical buildings help future-proof the city to ensure that amongst these changes, Melbourne retains and even builds upon its unique character?

14:40 - 15:00The Virtual Tower - Design Through to Operation There has been an enormous rate of uptake in virtual technologies across all industries over the last 5 years. The construction industries have led in this space due to the excellent fit of visual technologies with the built environment. From BIM (Building Information Models) to the dawning of the "Digital Twin" otherwise known as smart buildings, with swaths of sensors and monitoring technologies for improved building operation that can be shared across increasingly fast data networks; we are seeing technology have a huge impact on buildings. Nowhere is this more apparent than in the design, delivery and operation of our modern SkyScrapers, as the dependability, quality and functionality of our mixed-use developments, with growing communities moving towards vertical landscapes, are vital to the positive development and functioning of our smart cities. This presentation will explore concepts of virtual technologies for design through to operation, and how Digital Twins (a new concept in operational efficiency) can aid in both the front end delivery of the built environment and the continuing operation of buildings through intuitive interaction of occupants with virtual spaces. Case studies will be presented in live realtime environments, exploring a range of virtual use cases that will explore how the design process was aided with interactive media, and highlight the long term value generated from integrated virtual models to the development.
